I'm sure you've seen those articles before: the ones that proudly claim drinking just a cup of green tea will cure all your problems! The clickbaity titles and "5 ways" that ultimately say nothing.
Well, this isn't that kind of article. We're going to look deep into green tea and try our best to answer this one burning question: Is green tea really a miracle potion?
The short answer? No.
As much as we love green tea, it only compliments a healthy lifestyle. You can't just drink a cuppa and call it a day! But drinking tea regularly can benefit you greatly in many ways. Here are just a few examples:
Did you know that Japanese women have six times lower chance of getting breast cancer compared to North Americans? I don't want to mislead you: it's not just green tea. But one study shows that their diet - full of mushrooms, soy and (guess what) green tea is heavily linked to that statistic. I've got plenty of green tea in my cupboard, but now I really need to stock up on some shiitake!
DNAI'm sure you've heard about antioxidants. In case you haven't, they are powerful substances that prevent damage to your cells. Why am I writing about this? It turns out, green tea has a lot of them. Just read this:
According to one study, around 40 minutes after drinking a single cup of green tea we see a significant increase of antioxidants in our bloodstream. While this lowers the daily damage done to our DNA (which is amazing on it's own), there's something even more mind boggling: drinking green tea can actually help repair DNA. Yup - one study shows that pre-existing damage was reduced by approximately 30% after 4 weeks of supplementation with green tea. I don't know about you, but I'm starting my grean tea binge ASAP!
AcneNow this one's interesting: Topical 2% green tea lotion is found to be an efficient, cost-effective treatment for mild-to-moderate acne. Just 6 weeks of applying it cut the number of pimples in half! If only I knew about it in my teenage years...
There are many more ways green tea can help, but these facts alone should be a reason good enough to get up and put a kettle on! Especially if you have a bit of Disco in your cupboard, which is also packed with berries for that extra variety of antioxidants!
By the way, it's worth noting that we keep discovering new properties of green tea all the time. We'll keep you updated with any developements - and please let us know if you've enjoyed the article!
